AAKC's Critical Care Services

AAKC also has seven pediatric critical care specialists. All are board-certified in pediatrics, and each is fellowship-trained and board-certified in pediatric critical care.  We staff the Pediatric ICU and adjacent Intermediate Care Unit at the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. The combined units are 27 beds.  There were over 1,600 admissions and 4,000 patient-days of care last year. While there is a strong residency program and comprehensive pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty support at CMH, our philosophy of hands-on care led us to begin 24x7 in-house attending coverage back in March, 1997--years before other pediatric critical care groups started doing this.

We care for a broad range of patients, from 1200 gms to 200 lbs, premature babies to 35 year-olds, all with pediatric diseases or injuries. We assist in the post-operative care of cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic, plastic surgery (including craniofacial), otolaryngology, and transplant (renal & bone marrow) patients when they're in the PICU.  Our physicians direct the hospital's Pediatric Transport service and it's Pediatric Advanced Life Support training center.
